LOST LOVE FOUND ONCE MORE
I run a professional matchmaking agency in NZ called Two's Company. This sees me organising 80 to 100 dates every week for singles looking to find a partner. After twenty years of heart to heart talks with hundreds of local single clients, in Auckland and Wellington, I often hear one recurring story that is so common that I feel it warrants a mention.
In the majority of cases it is a man who tells me some version of this story; “I lost the love of my life because I realised too late how much she meant to me. I was not ready to commit when she was. I was scared of the perceived changes I thought a serious commitment would bring. Now our relationship is over, she has moved on and I can see that a committed relationship with her could have been a very positive, good thing and not as difficult as I imagined it to be. I wish I could go back in time and do things differently....however it's too late."
This is a very sad and tragic story because there is an enormous amount of pain and confusion involved for both parties. It is a reminder to us all to value what we have and never take the gift of another’s heart for granted.
The irony is, they say a woman falls in love in a man’s presence and a man falls in love in a woman’s absence.
There is however an upside to this because the time to reflect and the experience of loss all work together on a persons character; growth, wisdom and maturity result. We learn from our pain lessons that can positively impact our behaviour and our ability to appreciate and value the next "good" person or "great" love who comes into our lives.
While for some it may well be that it is the "one who got away" that they are finally able to fully enjoy loving, for many others with the desire to share life with someone new, this is where I come in!
